The demand for paper production, especially the packaging paper now requires a large source of raw materials. Based on this, Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association has sent a document to The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment on the suggestion for import license for paper scrap to produce paper packaging in particular and paper industry in general.

The actual state of raw materials for packaging paper production

Packaging paper is one of the important items that contributes to the development of many business activities, and the annual consumption of paper packaging is huge. According to the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association, raw materials for paper packaging are mainly recycled paper, accounting for 85-90% of the raw material input, and there are some kinds of packaging paper using 100% of this raw material.

However, the shortage of raw materials creates challenges for paper industry. Based on this, the Prime Minister issued Directive 27 / CT-TTg on urgent measures to enhance the management of the import and the use of scrap as raw materials for production. .

In addition, from the end of June until now, the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association has sent many official letters to the management agencies such as the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, the General Department of Customs to solve the difficulties for paper enterprises.

Challenges that paper enterprises need to face

One of the current challenges of many enterprises in the paper industry  is to make sure that they meet the criteria of importing scrap paper as raw materials for production.

According to the Vietnam Paper and Pulp Association, the time extension for scrap import and the delay of extending scrap import licenses is directly affecting the supply of packaging paper for export. Therefore, the Vietnam Paper and Pulp Association suggested Minister Tran Hong Ha to direct the relevant units of the Ministry to urgently remove difficulties in importing scrap materials as raw materials for production enterprises. Also, the paper industry needs to consider and direct the relevant units under the Ministry to urgently review and extend licenses to eligible enterprises to import scrap paper as raw materials for production.

In short, the demand for packaging paper in particular and the paper industry in general shows that this is a very potential market. However, current paper enterprises need to face some challenges, especially the input of raw materials.
